Sly Stone (born Sylvester Stewart, March 15, 1943) is a pioneering American musician, songwriter, and producer best known as the frontman of the ground breaking funk and soul band Sly and the Family Stone.

He played a key role in the development of funk music and was also influential in psychedelic soul, rock, and the broader evolution of Black music in the 20th century.
Born in Denton, Texas, and raised in Vallejo, California. He was a musical prodigy, playing piano, guitar, bass, and drums by his teens.
As a teenager, he formed several bands and later became a DJ at KSOL, a soul radio station in San Francisco, where his eclectic music taste began to take form.

Founded in 1966, the band was notable for its: Integrated lineup (racially and gender diverse). Innovative fusion of funk, soul, rock, and psychedelia.
Explosive live performances and politically charged lyrics.
Key Albums & Songs:
Stand! (1969) – features hits like “Everyday People” and “I Want to Take You Higher”
There’s a Riot Goin’ On (1971) – darker, more introspective; includes “Family Affair”
Fresh (1973) – influential to funk and early hip-hop.

The band’s message of unity and social consciousness resonated during the Civil Rights Movement and counterculture of the 1960s and ’70s. Sly's increasing drug use, missed concerts, and erratic behaviour began to affect the band.

Internal tensions, especially over creative control and personal differences, led to the band's disintegration by the mid-1970s.
He attempted a solo career, but it never matched his early success.
Sly Stone is credited with being one of the originators of funk, directly influencing artists like Prince, George Clinton, and Michael Jackson.

Samples of his music became foundational in hip-hop, especially in the 1980s and ’90s.
Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 with the Family Stone.

Lived largely out of the public eye for decades.
Battled drug addiction and financial hardship—at one point reported to be homeless, living in a van in Los Angeles.
In 2023, he released a memoir titled Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin), co-written with Ben Greenman, revealing the highs and lows of his life and career.
The band’s name is also a play on Sly’s own name: Sly and the “Family” Stone — two of his siblings were also members of the group.
